League City, Texas is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,551 at the 2010 census. League City is located on the banks of the Clear Fork of the Christi River. It is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan area. League City was founded by German immigrants in 1881 as a small farm town. The name comes from "Lechtaler" which means "to clean up." The first post office in League City was established in 1881, and it remained open until 1914. In 1896, eight miles (13 km) east of League City along U.S. 90 was founded what would become Azle Village; Azle Village became League City after it merged with neighboring Valley View into one municipality on April 1, 1912. In 1916, Asbury Park Press reporter John O'Donnell interviewed local businessmen about forming an Independent Business District to provide more competition for larger cities within San Antonio County; this idea would later be adopted by other towns within San Antonio County and eventually lead to the establishment of the current Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) that includes LeagueCity proper as well as most of Dripping Springs and much of Midland since 1996 when that portion of San Antonio County moved from Austin to serve as its own MSA
The city of League City, Texas was founded by men from the Kansas Territory in 1871. The town sprang up around a wagon stop on the Santa Fe Trail and quickly grew as a trading post and cattle market. In 1881, League City became the terminus of the Southern Pacific Railroad's transcontinental main line. The railroad stimulated economic development in the area through its construction of miles of track and goods yards. In 1911, League City was renamed Dallas after Dallas County, Texas, which adjoined Texas to the north. In 1925, League City merged with Worth County to formDallas-Worth County District #2.
