Today, League City remains one of the leading producers of natural gas in the United States., In 2006, Mayor Tom Barrett announced that he would not seek re-election due to health reasons; he was succeeded by Councilman Rick Perry who also served on Council from 2006 through 2010 before becoming mayoralty candidate in 2012. In 2016, Perry won re-election against incumbent Houston Mayor Annise Parker with nearly 58% of the vote

League City, Texas is located in the heart of Texas and has been a part of the state for over 100 years. The city was founded by Josiah Gregg in 1837 as a small cotton town on the banks of the Guadalupe River. The name League City comes from a local Indian word meaning "place where goods are sold." Gregg named his town after David Lloyd Wright, one of his friends and investors in the early days of League City's development. The first school in League City was built on what is now First Baptist Church. In 1841, Union Army officers called on Gregg to provide them with shelter from Confederate cavalry patrols searching for any supplies they could find along the border between Mexico and Texas. In response, Gregg donated land to create a military post that would serve as headquarters for Union forces during their war with Mexico. The post became known as Camp Treaty Hill and later changed its name to Fort Worth after General Antonio Ladds bought it in 1849. In 1857, Josiah Gregg married Anna Hardenbeck and began farming near present-day League City. Their farm became known as Hardenbeck Station and produced corn, wheat, cattle, horses, and buffalo robes until 1893 when it was acquired by George Witty Jr., who renamed it Witty Ranch. Witty continued to operate it until 1965 when he sold it to JB Hensley Sr., who operated it until 1978 when he donated it to the League City Heritage Foundation under the name "Hensley Park". Today, Hensley Park is home to many trails including a beautiful 9-mile loop trail that starts at Market Square downtown and ends at Kleinman Creek Resort just south of Interstate 10). When World War II started in 1939, many Texans decided they needed jobs because their states were already affected by wartime rationing. Many people moved intoLeagueCity during this time including servicemen who were stationed there or those who had family living there outside of Texas because they could not get government jobs elsewhere due to wartime restrictions on travel within our country (such as usingenemy resources). In 1945,when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor,,the city exploded with patriotism as citizens pulled together to help fight against fascism around the world (many areas within Texas did not participate fully in this patriotic spirit)). After World War II ended in 1945 labor shortages arose due largely to newly opened markets following America's entry into World War II which resulted in an increasein competition for workers throughout much ofNorthAmerica (this phenomena is often referredtoas "The Great American Negro Migration").Many young men left college campuses across North America looking for work; however few found positions that suited them right away so they returned home after several months or even years depending on their skillsetand location (i.e., most truck drivers were never given callouts while driving trucks full of food convoys across Canada becauseHandlellFamiliesownedandoperatedtrucks). Many residents continue living here through today's arrivals such as Hispanics/ Latinos working various high tech jobs or retirees continuing down Route 66 every day seeking out tasty cupcakes from Old Mrs Coulter’s bakery!
