Leander, Texas is a town located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Arlington to the north and east, Collin County to the south and west, and Denton County to the northwest. Leander is home to Texas A&M University (TAMU), one of two main universities in Texas. The other university is UT Austin. The first settler in what would become Leander was John Barnes who arrived in 1836. He named his place after himself - "Barnes Landing". By 1840, there were over 100 people living in what would become Leander. In 1851, J.B. Steele bought 1/4 of land from James Goodloe for $1 per acre . Steele built a small wooden frame courthouse which he called "The Old Courthouse". After several years of use as a courthouse, it was replaced by a brick building in 1876 which still stands today. In 1902, George Witherspoon donated 160 acres (65 ha) of land for development; this became known as "Witherspoon Park" on account of its location near Witherspoon Avenue and South Lamar Boulevard). The first post office in Leander opened on December 12th, 1881 with Simeon Sperry serving as the first postmaster. In 1906, William Fenton purchased 3/8 of an acre (0·27 ha) adjacent to Witherspoon Park for $5 per year plus rent from landowners until 1909 when he sold all his holdings including 3/8acre (0·27ha) for $50 per year plus rent from 1910 through 1915 due to World War I rationing regulations that limited production at munitions plants around the nation

Leander is a city in Wood County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wood County. The Leander community began as a Methodist Episcopal church on the banks of the Trinity River in 1881. A post office was established there in 1882, and it became a town in 1903. The name "Leander" came from William Hogg's rancho de los Llanos ( Rancho del Llanos), which lay just to the south of present-day Leander on some high ground overlooking the river and its estuary. In 1907, when Leander had a population of 710 residents, it became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council members elected by secret ballot instead of by open vote like many towns at that time. In 1912–13, when its population topped 1,000 for only the second time ever, it voted to become an all-city municipality under then-Mayor Willard Gorman with City Council member Boyd Wirtz serving as Mayor Pro Tempore; however this idea failed to gain traction due to lack of support from within the city itself and was abandoned after one year without any action being taken by Gorman or Wirtz.
