Leon Valley is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The valley was named after General James K. Polk and his wife, Julia Ward Howe. The land that now comprises Leon Valley was first homesteaded by pioneers in 1857. In 1872, the railroad came through the valley and began to bring people and goods to Texans who were growing cotton and cattle in other parts of the state. In 1898, Judge James Ladd of nearby Marble Falls purchased 375 acres (190 hectares) of what would become Leon Valley from John Wesley Hardin for $6,000.Judge Ladd had come to Texas as a lawyer in 1851 and had been active in politics since then; he had served as mayor of Houston from 1865 to 1870 and as attorney general from 1871 to 1875. He also served on the board of trustees for Rice University until his death in 1888. In 1902, developers bought an additional 202 acres (87 hectares) north of Leon Valley from Judge Ladd's estate; they called it "Lakewood." The new development became known as "Lakewood Hills". By 1910, Lakewood Hills boasted a population of 478 people - more than any other community within Williamson County save Alpine Springs - and was home to six schools: Highland Elementary School (opened in 1903), Spring Branch Intermediate School (opened in 1904), Clear Creek Junior High School (opened in 1909), Parklands Elementary School (opened in 1911), and Lancaster Senior High School (opened in 1914). 2 miles east of Lakewood Hills stood another soon-to-be center for industry - Round Rock - which would eventually eclipse Lakewood Hills as Williamson County's leading city center. But even Round Rock could not keep up with lakefront developments along Travis Bayou around Lake Travis; by 1920, Beatrice had replaced Round Rock as Williamson County's second largest city Center behind Austin
Leon Valley was founded by John Leon in 1847. The town was named for the stream that ran through it. It began as a small farming community, and soon became a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. In 1881, the railroad arrived, and Leon Valley became one of its main hubs. The town also enjoyed some popularity as a weekend getaway spot for residents of Dallas and Fort Worth. However, over time, Leon Valley's population decreased and it eventually merged with nearby McKinney to form the current city of McKinney.
