Levelland is a small town in south-central Texas, United States, located on the Llano River. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Bryan metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by horticulturist and landowner John H. Levelland and his wife Anna Caldwell Levelland. The name comes from "Llano", meaning "low water" in Spanish, and refers to its location between two low hills on the river bank. By 1907, the population had grown to over 1,000 people and included a variety of businesses such as hotels, grocery stores, cotton ginners, mill owners and farmers who raised livestock for meat or milk production. In 1912 Levelland built a dam across the river that provided power for local mills which produced flour and other goods until 1966 when turbines were installed to produce electricity for homes and businesses. Today much of what once went into making bread or clothing now goes intoanolastic production which uses recycled materials including glass bottles that are cut down to size with jigsaw blades then heated until they break down into molecules of hydrogen gas which can be drawn off like oil from shale formations) Amarillo Municipal Airport is located about 15 miles (24 km) east of town on I-35W. Amarillo Regional Airport (KXAS), also served by regional airlines Frontier Airlines and PlainsCapital Airlines serves as an airport less than 10 miles (16 km) west of town on I-40 North/Southwestern Expressway
