The town's only remaining downtown business district is located adjacent to Main Street just south of Interstate 35W exit 169B/170A east of I-35W main freeway Exit 169N/170E - "Downtown Levelland". According to Forbes magazine’s 2018 list of America's fastest growing cities – property values have increased more than 50% since 2016 – Downtown Levelland has seen similar growth rates over recent years including 10%. In addition, according to Forbes' 2019 list of America’s most affordable places to live – prices for housing have decreased 5% from 2018 levels – Downtown Levelland now ranks #1in Texas among Uptown areas experiencing significant gentrification over that time period! The town of Levelland was founded in 1867 by John and Sarah Trimble. The Trimbles were followed by other settlers, and the town became a thriving community. The first store opened in 1868, and soon there were several businesses in the town. In 1870, Levelland had its own school system. In 1877, the town voted to create a city government, and it quickly grew into a bustling metropolis. By 1906, Levelland had over 2,000 residents. The economy thrived thanks to its cheap labor force and good infrastructure. In 1914, the city annexed neighboring towns of Lamar and Waco for $50 per capita fee. This process enabled Levelland to become one of Texas' most important cities. During World War II, Levelland played an important role in the war effort as it was home to various military installations such as Air Base #4 (now Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland). After the war ended in 1945, Levelland continued to grow rapidly with new development coming through annexation of nearby townships along the way. By 1970,Levelland had reached its current size with over 4,000 residents living within its borders
