Levelland is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 146,744 as of July 2017. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth-Arlington Combined Statistical Area. Levelland was founded in 1892 by J.D. Levelland and his wife, Fannie Bendix Levelland. The town was named after J.D.'s father, who had settled there in 1868. In 1897, Levelland became an independent municipality with its own government and fire department; it annexed neighboring townships in 1902 to form a full city. In 1957, Levelland approved plans for a new downtown shopping district that would include over 100 stores and restaurants along Elm Street between Paris Avenue and Dealey Boulevard; this project became known as "The Park". The district's first store opened in 1959 and it has continued to grow ever since. In 1995, Levelland voters passed a resolution recognizing Mayberry Square—a two-block (500-foot) stretch of Elm Street between I-30 and Lamar Boulevard—as their official downtown square; this designation helped spur development along Elm Street including the construction of several large hotels and office buildings frequented by locals and visitors alike. In the 1920s, Levelland became a manufacturing center for aircraft manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, which helped to make the town an important node in the Texas industrial belt. By the early 21st century, Levelland had shrunken back to its original size, but its legacy remains deeply entrenched in the local economy and community.
Levelland is a small town in Texas, located in the Tarrant County seat of Fort Worth. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settler in Levelland was James Wellman, who arrived in 1851 and built a cabin on what is now east side of Main Street. The town was founded by cattle ranchers from Wichita Falls, TX to provide market for their products and to drive out Comanche and Kiowa Indians who were raiding their herds. A post office called "Levelland" was established in 1857, but it did not stay open very long because no one wanted to deal with a bunch of strangers. In 1862 Wm Fenton opened a general store on East Main Street which became known as "Fenton's", after him. In 1865 Jno Clements set up his own grocery store on South Main Street which became known as "Clements'". By 1870 there were four stores operating in the community including two banks and several hotel rooms. In 1875 Nathaniel Armstrong started a flour mill on the west side of what is now south main street; this mill continued operation until 1938 when it was bought by Globe Flour Mills Incorporated (now based in Overland Park, Kansas). In 1907 John Pemberton brought over an irrigation system from Wichita Falls that helped make Levelland one of the most agriculturally prosperous communities in Texas during that time period; he also constructed much of today's downtown core including many homes built between 1909 and 1912 using red brick style architecture typical for then-Highlandsville areas outside Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex (the red brick style has been replaced by more recent styles since then). Additionally, early Levelland residents such as Jno Clements, Nathaniel Armstrong and John Pemberton – all former farmers – played major roles in helping establish Fort Worth as one of America's largest cities during its growth spurt following World War I. By 1920 Levelland had become Fort Worth's biggest city with over 60 businesses employing over 1,000 people within its limits; it would grow even further during the 1920s through annexation by other nearby towns including Arlington Heights (later renamed Arlington) and Plano (later renamed Richardson). During this time period Levelland experienced some rough times however due largely to farming recession caused by high prices for feeds resulting from WWI production shortages ↑
