The first settler in Levelland was James Compton who founded a cabin in 1836. The town was named after General David Lloyd (1785-1851), who fought in the Mexican War and later served as governor of New Mexico. In 1879, Levelland became the county seat of Wichita County when it was split from Archer County. The city of Wichita Falls replaced Levelland as the county seat in 1907. The townsite that now makes up Levelland was first inhabited by Native Americans when they first arrived during the early 1800s. A post office called Hahaha was established in 1838, but no mail ever arrived because there wasn’t enough space on the road for two vehicles to enter at once! Eventually a fortuitous location led to its current name: “Levelland” comes from Dutch meaning “humble place” or “outfitters station” because goods were brought into this area by stagecoach along Utopia Road (now Interstate 35).
