The town name was chosen to honor John Lewis, a Scottish immigrant who had purchased land near Kilwinning for £100 (). Families started settling around Lewisville after Independence Day on July 4, 1837 when surveyor Fenton Caldwell surveying the area pegged it as part of Baylor County. On April 30, 1840 James Ewing sold his land southwest of present day Lewisville to Wm Hatton for $600 (). This opened up much more open space in that area which led to the town's growth. In 1854 Hatton donated two acres (2 ha) northeast of present day Lewisville to establish a public burying ground. This donation remains one of the largest ever made by an individual in this county and has been used by various churches and schools since then including First Baptist Church still standing today as well as Riverbend Cemetery just east of downtown which also serves as a park today with a large old tree on its grounds serving as a green space and picnic tables where people can enjoy picnics during springtime or falltime when temperatures are above 50 degrees Fahrenheit (.15°C). christopher powells farmstead property located east off I-10 about 3 miles south became known as Powells Station after pioneer Christopher Powell who farmed there from about 1800 until his death about 1870.. The post office was established at Lewisville on November 15, 1850, under the name Newton Avenue (). The first Postmaster general was Amos Kendall () . mail service from Fort Worth began operation on October 1st 1851 () . With only six residents registered at time (), mail delivery services were suspended for several months due to lack OF certified mail! The first post office closed its doors on May 1st 1861 because too many residents had moved away!. In 1865 local physician Drs Edward Smith & Samuel Richardson built a small hospital/medical school within walking distance using donated equipment they received from Dr John Sangerqqqrler (). For many years this hospital operated without any government funding or support however due to changes occurring throughout Texas during that time period it eventually regained state funding and reopened under new management with full government support starting September 10th 1984(). Today this facility continues operations proud1ly called HealthSouthLewisville!
