The community also hosted Army Air Forces Base Little Elm which served as a storage depot for B-17 Flying Fortresses during World War II. Since 2000, Little Elm has been home to AIG Corporation's headquarters which occupy over 5 acres (2 ha). The company moved from their original headquarters in Round Rock to this location after purchasing land adjacent to what is now Main Street. The new headquarters are designed as a largest office building west of Houston that can accommodate up to 1 million people inside and out.

Little Elm, Texas was founded in 1836 by John C. Fayette and his wife, Rachel. It is located in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas, about twenty miles south of El Paso. Little Elm was a small community when it was founded, consisting of only a few hundred people. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s due to its strategic location and as a result, Little Elm had more than two hundred residents by 1850. By 1860, the population had increased to three thousand and by 1870 it had reached six thousand. From its founding until the late 1800s, Little Elm served as an important center for commerce in the Rio Grande Valley region. In addition to being an important agricultural center, Little Elm also became a key military district during this time period because it lay on vital transportation routes connecting El Paso with Ciudad Juárez and Mexico City. During the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Little Elm was one of several Texan towns that sided with Mexico against United States forces. After Mexico's victory over US forces at Monterrey in 1847, many Texans decided that they would not return to American rule after all. Accordingly, many of these Texans moved to northern Mexico or eastward into what is now Oklahoma Territory where they continued to live under Mexican rule until their independence from Mexico was achieved in 1912. Consequently, little else is known about specific Little Elm history from before 1836 up through 1912 other than what has been recounted hereinabove specifically about that year in particular - which is largely thanks to The Lone Star Encyclopedia (www.tlse encyclopedia). However, there are some noteworthy events associated with Little Elm during this time period that deserve further discussion: 1) In 1854 local resident J A McClendon erected the first sod building in present-day Big Spring County while still living at home; 2) On July 20th of that year – just days after Independence Day – William H Brawley set fire to part of Fort Worth's Central Prison Complexkilling thirty-six prisoners inside; 3) As part of Reconstruction efforts following General Ulysses S Grant's successful campaign for reelection as President in November 1868 (and consequent end of Reconstruction across much of America), Congress designated Big Spring County as oneof five regions within Texas administered by District Attorney James Fenton;4) On December 3rd OF THAT YEAR an event occurred which would have far-reaching consequences for both locals and tourists visitingLittleElm over ensuing decades;5) That same day cornerstonefor First Baptist Churchwas laid at cornerof Main StreetAnd Texas Avenuein present day LittleElm by Reverend P Lamar Funkhouser who later served as pastor therefrom1885until his deathin1927;6) That same yearELP Railroad constructed a road between downtown LEP and Big Spring Junction thereby makingLEPthe first incorporated municipality westofthe Mississippi RiveroutsideHouston);7) November 1899 marks100 years sinceFirst BaptistChurch construction & services therein commenced (& congregation remains active today);8) January 1910 saw installation OF Functional neonatal Intensive Care Unitatourist destination’s newest Hospital/ Residence named “Shrine Hill”after prominent philanthropistDrJames M Wrightwhose Donation helped make facility possible(now known as McLennan Health System);9) November 1922 saw establishment Of Anglo Texan Legion Post # 57 adjacentto ShrineHill Hospitalbecomingoneofthelargestpostsinthe legion throughout its existence;10] February 1928 marked centennial anniversaryofFirst BaptistChurch construction & services therein commencing (& congregation continues active today).
In 1879, a group of men from Texas decided to build a town on the site of what is now Little Elm. The name was chosen because Elm trees were plentiful in that area and had been used for Timber in previous settlements. The town was founded on July 1, 1881, by John W. Collin and his wife Sarah Jane Collin. A post office was established in 1886 and remained in operation until 1915. The town's first store was built on the corner of Second Street and Elm Street. It operated for about a year before being closed due to financial difficulties. A second store opened on the property adjacent to First Street in 1887 and continued operations until it also closed within a few months due to financial troubles. In 1889, the first schoolhouse was built and served as the primary educational facility for the small community until it burned down in 1922. A third schoolhouse was constructed on Fourth Street between Elm and First Streets in 1896 but this too became unoccupied after few students attended its classes. A fourth schoolhouse (known as “Strawberry Hill”) was constructed at Seventh Avenue between Elm and Fifth Streets around 1912 but it also failed to meet requirements foroperation due to its location close to residential development that began shortly thereafter. Since there were no nearby churches or other significant facilities available for education purposes, most residents attend local public schools which serve as their only source of instruction during pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 levels; however, some parents may choose private schools if they can justify the cost difference or feel their child would benefit from more rigorous academic program than provided at public schools near them; private schools are not limited by space or enrollment so may have additional classrooms/hallways specifically designated for special needs students etc.; Little Elm's last high school graduated its last class with grades 9-12 in 2016).
