Little Elm, Texas is a small town located in far northeastern McLennan County, Texas. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLennan County. Little Elm was founded in 1875 by citizens of Fort Worth and Arlington who vacated their homes to build a new town on the Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike. The first post office was established in 1876. The name “Little Elm” originated from its location near an old Elm tree that had been prominently located in downtown Fort Worth before it was moved to what is now known as University Park Drive. The Mexican-American War (1846-48) occurred nearby and during the war several local businesses were destroyed or looted by Mexican soldiers and civilians seeking treasure and arms caches left behind by Mexico's army leader, Santa Anna. The community grew rapidly after the war ended with many new settlers coming through the post office to start new lives in what would become Little Elm Township. In 1881, Little Elm incorporated as a village under the name of Floresville which lasted until 1907 when it changed back to Little Elm Township due to lack of support from residents for another name change(). In 1902, construction began on what would become one of McLennan County's most famous landmarks - Interstate 35W - which ran through much of eastern McLennan County at that time including present day Little Elm and other nearby communities such as Flower Mound and White Settlement.
