They founded the community on land that had been bought by Major George Wickersham and his wife Mary Alice Emory Wickersham from Manuel Carrillo for $1,000. In 1851, Clements brothers established a sawmill and gristmill in what is now downtown Lockhart while Mission San Francisco de Asís conducted services there from 1852 to 1862. A post office called Lockhart was established in 1864, but it closed operation within two years because no mail could be delivered due to lack of roads. In 1870, Captured General James Denton's forces evacuated Fort Worth and camped near present-day Lockhart for several weeks before moving on westward toward Amarillo. That same year, John Denton settled at what is now east side Main Street in Lockhart with his family after being released from prison at Fort Worth by General Sam Houston's army during the Mexican-American War. In 1886 lumberman Jens Jensen opened a mill south of downtown which soon became an important factor in local economic development; as well as providing jobs for many local residents including future Mayor Harry Burtch and State Senator Lloyd Moseley Sr.. In 1907 Texaco began operations here followed by Shell Oil Company holdings until 1990 when they merged into ConocoPhillipsTexaco Incorporated lock Hart Business Park across IH 35W from downtown annexation into McKinney annexation). With its busy commercial district and numerous businesses lining Main Street (including Lumber Yard & Supply Co., Texaco station #2),Lockhart served as an important center for business activity during both World Wars II and subsequent decades until it succumbed to suburbanization beginning around the late 1970s with plans to build apartment complexes nearby .
