In recent years, many new subdivisions have been created around Pioneer Square Park as residents continue tofbust outgrowing their homes within walking distance of their workplaces or schools
Lufkin, Texas was founded on January 2, 1836 by James Fayette Ladd and his wife Jane. The town was named for the Creek word "Lufkin" meaning "a small stream." Ladd and his family were the first people to live in Lufkin. They built a log cabin on the current site of the High School. In 1839, they married Anna Maria Murphy. The first courthouse in Lufkin was built in 1840. It was destroyed by a storm in 1842, but a new court house was built soon after. The town had to be abandoned due to the Indian war that started in 1845.
