Mansfield is a small town in Tom GREEN county, Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Mansfield is located on FM 965 north of Tom GREEN and east of Huntsville. The city of Mansfield was founded in 1887 by A.G. White and James Hines. It grew rapidly due to its location near the Texas-Oklahoma border and its proximity to the railroad depot which made it an important transportation center for the area. In 1924, Mansfield became one of six towns in Tom GREEN county that were consolidated with neighboring Huntsville to form The Townships of Mansfield, Huntsville, and Springdale. Today, Mansfield's economy revolves around agriculture, trade unions, and education; however, some businesses that have been prominent in the community include Midland Ford (which produces cars), The Citizens Bank (owned by Monsanto), ExxonMobil's Texaco refinery in 2000-2001, Tyson Foods' hog farm and processing plant (now closed), as well as several churches including First Baptist Church of Mansfield which was also home to the first African American congregation in Texas before integration occurred there in 1954; Stroudsburg Bible College; as well as several restaurants such as Joe's Pizza & Pasta and Wings Over Waffle House that are still open today. Mansfield, Texas is a town located in the U.S. state of Texas and has a population of approximately 508 people as of 2010. The town was founded in 1873 by one of the original settlers in what is now Richardson County, Texas. It became a city in 1907, and then a town again in 1959. Mansfield is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Mansfield began as an agricultural community on the banks of the Trinity River, about six miles (10 km) northeast of Richardsonville. By 1873, it had become known as "The Meadows" because it stretched across 6½ square miles (18 km2). In 1907, Mansfield became a city under the name Richardsonville; however, it reverted to its rural appellation two years later when Interstate 10 was built through that territory. Mansfield's early history reflects its location on railroad tracks: at one time there were four different railroads serving Mansfield—the Old Northern Railway, which connected Dallas with Fort Worth; the Houston & New Orleans Railroad; and finally the Dallas North Side Railroad. Today only one line still serves Mansfield: Amtrak's "Southwest Express." The first settler in what is now Richardson County was James Hargrave who arrived from Ireland around 1802. He named his new land "Mansfeld," after his home countrymans village near Manchester England (present day Manchester). Other early landowners included John Ahern and others from Dublin Scotland and John Madden from Belfast Ireland also settling hereabouts about this time frame also naming their holdings for their birthplace or other English places visited such as London Bridge or Windsor Castle etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera...In those days there were no roads present so Company Wagon Train would go down to San Antonio to pick up goods then head back upriver to our place called “Hillsboro” on I-10 just south side today’s junction with US Highway 183 where we stopped for dinner cooking our horses over an open fire while awaiting our next ride out west tomorrow morning all done without any kind of air conditioning inside those days very hot weather outside just like it is today even hotter than summertime right now so enjoy your summer while you can
Mansfield was founded in 1849 by John and Nancy Mansfield. It became the county seat of Galveston County in 1876. In 1907, it was renamed for General James H. Mansfield, who had served as a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War.
