Marshall, Texas is a town in Woodland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Woodland County. The Marshall community was founded in 1879 by J.D. Marshall and his brother-in-law Wm.H. Thomas as a farming and trading center on the bank of the Brazos River near present day Marshall University. The first post office was established in 1881 and it remained open until 1907 when it changed its name to Marshalltown (now part of Houston). In 1907, J.D.'s daughter Mabel married John Ladd who became one of the early settlers in what is now Marshalltown; he also donated land for a public school which still stands today and serves as the town's primary source of education and economic development today. The original courthouse building located on Main Street between Second and Third Streets burned down in 1902 but was rebuilt within 5 years with assistance from local citizens under then Sheriff James Maultson Sr.. The current courthouse building dates back to 1914 when it replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire during World War I; this building remains one of the older buildings in town and houses many historical artifacts fromMarshall's past including its own clock tower which can be toured for free every half hour during business hours! In 1923, John Ladd donated land east of Main Street along US Highway 277 for what would become known as "Ladd Park". It became a city in 1938 and a full-time county seat in 1958. John Marshall had come to the Lone Star State from Kentucky as a farm boy in 1852. He started out selling salt pork to travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1865, he married Anna Neely who came from nearby Dallas. They raised six children: John (1866-1937), James (1868-1948), Anna (1870-1945), Dorothy Fenton (1872-1964), and Barbara Neely Marshall (born October 16, 1924). In 1876, they bought some land near what is now Marshalltown for $10 per acre ($2 million today). They named their new community "Marshall" after John's older brother of that name who also lived there before moving westward to Kansas City County, Missouri. In 1886, the brothers sold their holdings in Marshallsville to Averill Harriman of Wichita Falls for $5 per acre ($1 million today). The Harrimans laid out streets and homes within two years and began working with local farmers to expand agriculture into this newly formed community. More people moved into Marshall during this time period; it had a population of 350 by 1900! By 1910, the population had reached 2,100 and by 1930 it was over 4500! As industrial production increased throughout the Great Depression era in America, so did unemployment rates; by 1940 only 10% of citizens were employed! However due toias WD Forrestal's 1941 Executive Order 998 which granted public assistance programs like Aid to Families With Dependent Children (AFDC) to all American citizens regardless of employment status or poverty levels - many residents lost their jobs but still managed to maintain home ownership - many people returned back into their homes during these tough times! During World War II most residents enlisted or served within the military whereupon many businesses closed down due lack of customers or manufacturing capabilities elsewhere in America during those difficult wartime years……..many properties changed hands again during that time including one property rights holder’s daughter becoming Mrs. Forrestal herself………..her father then conveyed his interest back through her inheritance towards development…………….When she died suddenly just shy of her centenary birthday – November 5th 1973—the first female mayor/councilmember US history–MrsPublic Services Committee Member U District 128—was born…………….She will forever be known as MrsTommy Bennett
