Marshall, Texas is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The community started as a small farming village in 1881 on what is now Marshall road. By 1912 it had grown to include a school and post office. In 1933 Marshall was incorporated as a city with a population of 2,000. The city was annexed by Dallas in 1965 and has since lost its status as an independent municipality. In 1978 the town of Marshall merged with nearby Richardson to form the new city of Richardson-Marshall combined statistical area which had a total population of 101,711 as of 2010. The first settler in what would become Marshall was James Ephraim Stone who bought land east of present day Highway 183 in 1881 for $2 per acre. He built his home called "Stone's Store" on the current site of Brown's Mill Road (now US 69). Stone arrived with his family and began building their homes around 1882-1883 when they cleared some land and erected their sod house on present day Elm Street (now Holt Street). After trading goods with Native Americans for years he decided to found his own business across from Cottonwood creek called "Ephraim’s Trading Post". The store prospered until 1886 when fire destroyed all but one store building including Ephraim’s Trading Post . A new post office was also built that year but closed 5 years later due to lack of customers during World War I . A second post office opened 3 years later under name "Moses" after Moses Hogg who served as register from 1903 until 1907 . A thirdPost Office opened named "Holt"in 1911 after Nacoochee Indian Chief Holt who donated land for it next door to Stone's Store . This location became known as “Holt Place” until annexation into Dallas in 1965 After becoming an independent municipality ,the name changed back to "Marshall" In 1978 richardson-marshall combined Statistical Area had Total Population Of 101 711
Marshall was founded on August 3, 1836 by General James K. Polk and his wife Blanche in what is now Chambers County, Texas. The town grew quickly due to the influx of new settlers and the resulting boom in cattle ranching. By 1840, Marshall had a population of 235 residents. The town was renamed Marshall after General James K. Polk in 1845 and remained as such until it was incorporated into Austin on January 6, 1915.
