Caldwell with a population of just four people; it became the county seat on December 1, 1840 when San Antonio amalgamated with Bexar County. The first store opened in 1845 and soon others followed including a post office (1846), jail (1850), school district (1851), grain elevator (1854), cotton gin (1858), livery stable (1859) and mercantile business center ( 1865). The early settlers were subsistence farmers who raised corn, beans, cotton and other crops for local consumption or exported to markets in nearby Austin or Dallas. A railroad reached McKinney via Nacogdoches in 1867 and by 1870 it contained six stores and twenty-eight residents; it became an important commercial center for region as various railways connected different parts of Texas from Galveston to Houston through McKinney station on the Central Pacific Railroad system. By 1900 there were over 150 businesses operating out of downtown McKinney with 2,500 residents; its role as an agricultural center continues to this day with cattle ranching being one of its largest industries along with manufacturing such as textiles mills etc., which have replaced agriculture as the dominant economic activity since World War II As early as 1907 Mc Kinney featured prominently on UAW ticket stubs advertising “the best place to get your car fixed” becoming one of America’s most significant auto repair/repair shops until surpassed by Detroit within thirty years later .
