Midlothian, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, in the Mid-American region. It is located in Medina County and has a population of about 12,000 as of 2017. The name "Midlothian" was given to it by Scottish settlers who arrived there in the mid-19th century, after finding a place called "Lothian" on their journey from Edinburgh to New Orleans. The first settlement in what is now Midlothian was made on May 15, 1836 by John Crain and others under the leadership of Captain James Hogg. The town site was purchased from the Arapaho Indians by General Sam Houston on November 3, 1836 for $10 per acre (about $1 per square mile). Houston named Midlothian after his native county of Fife in Scotland—the same place where he had been born and raised. Houston's original home at Fair Oaks became an important part of Midlothian over time: It served as both his headquarters during the Texan Revolution (1835-1836) and as his seat at law until his death in 1845. In 1840s and 1850s other prominent Texans also lived here including Judge Nathan Bedford Forrest and General Sam Houston's brother light infantry officer Santa Anna; both men were later hanged here before being brought to justice elsewhere.
