Mission, Texas is a small town located in the Texas Panhandle. The town was founded by Americans in 1836 as Fort Clark. The town was named after Saint Ignatius of Loyola, who died in 1797 and was buried near Mexico City. In 1881, the United States government purchased the land around Fort Clark from the Mexican government and renamed it Mission. The mission became a Catholic church and school system that continues to operate today. The first settlers to Mission were Baptists who arrived in 1836. After some years, other denominations began arriving as well including Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, Catholics and Jews. By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Mission. In 1850-1851, several hand-to-mouth operations resulted in an increase of about 20 people living in Mission until a formal settlement could be made with the Mexican government which would provide for their financial needs while they awaited Americanization. On February 14th of 1852 members of the local militia band together to start building what would become known as "The Walls" or “The First Post” on present day US Highway 377 just west of downtown (now Main Street). This post served as a military outpost until 1861 when it became known as "Fort Clark". In 1881 Congress passed an act authorizing creation of Missions within newly acquired land west of San Antonio along US Hwy 281/US Hwy 381 which included much of present day San Antonio County but not yet Austin County. A group led by Father José Gomez organized dozens of men to come west Indies seeking Rancho San Marcos at what is now Nuevo Valle de Escobedo Cemetery east of IH-35W exit #209 off FM 620 southbound; this area contains many old farmhouses which still stand today among other ranch properties surrounding IH-35W exit #209 near Loop 410N
