Mount Pleasant is a small town in Kerr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Houston metropolitan area since it was established in 1967. The first settler in Mount Pleasant was John Hogg, who arrived in 1836. In 1840, James Kenedy settled there and began to build a cotton plantation called "Kenedy's Hope." Kenedy's Hope became the nucleus of what would become Mount Pleasant. In 1851, John Waddell arrived with his family and started to farm near present-day Mount Pleasant. He named his farm "Waddell Downs," after himself and his brother-in-law William Davenport (1810–1871). Waddell played an important role in developing early Mount Pleasant as a farming community. He donated land for a school and founded the first Baptist church in Kerr County. In 1870, Hiram Jenson bought "Waddell Downs" from Waddell and began to develop it into a large cotton plantation known as "Jenson's Cotton Plantation." From this plantation, Jenson developed one of Houston's most prominent cotton families - the Jensons. The Jensons were instrumental in helping createHouston's downtown business district during its early years. They also played an important role in politics and social life withinHouston until their retirement around 1960. Mount Pleasant experienced some major changes during the late 1800s and early 1900s: population growth caused by expanding export crops such as rice; development of transportation links across Kerr County via roadways; arrival of white labor forces that helped improve agriculture through better irrigation techniques; popularization of baseball diamonds on nearby Prairie View A&M University campuses which led to baseball being introduced as a cultural activity in Mountpleasant; incorporation of other rural communities intoHouston during this time period; transformation from agricultural village into bedroom community for city residents during World War II when local industry switched focus to munitions production
