Orange is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Orange has been called "the most important cotton center in the world" and "the heart of Texas". The first settler in Orange was John Pemberton who arrived in 1871. In 1881, an orange grove was planted by Wm Hogg and James Stewart near what is now the corner of Jefferson and I-35W. In 1902, David Joplin bought 5 acres (20,000 m²) of land east of town from A. Barton Pearce for $2,500. Joplin named his new venture "Orange" after Major General Antonio Bandera's unit that had fought against Mexican forces during the Texan–Mexican War (1846–1848). The first post office opened in Orange on April 15, 1903. The name change to Hudspeth County Courthouse on October 6, 1907 when it opened as a branch courthouse for Polk County. On November 3rd 1917 Hudspeth County Commissioners voted to rename Orange to Hutchinsville because Harry Hutchinson had made a Donation to Hutchinsville Methodist Church which included land for a jail and schoolhouse located just east of Hutchinsville on Commerce Street today known as Hutchinsville Elementary School District No 208; also Original Owner The Citizens Committee For Better Housing which bought & donated over 2000 sq ft lot @ 20th St & US 281 E; building lot still stands next door today known as Community House Annex (CHA)
