Pampa, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located just east of Austin and west of San Antonio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 813. The name Pampa comes from Chiappa or ? meaning "place where there is plenty" in Spanish. The first post office in Pampa opened on October 12, 1886. In 1907, Pampa had a railroad station and by 1916 it had a telephone line. The community was named after Sam Houston's home state of West Virginia because resident James Eads believed that Texans who went to visit their families in West Virginia would bring back pictures of the beautiful city they had seen on their trips eastward. In 1924, Pampa incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name Rangersville and became an official municipality within Travis County on November 1st that year with its own elected officials as well as its own hospital system and fire department. On July 7th 1957 United States President Dwight Eisenhower stopped at Ranger Station while en route to Austin & delivered his famous "Ike" speech from nearby San Antonio which included this sentence: "Ike Park will become known throughout Texas for its good old-fashioned ranch life." In 1970 Ranger Station served as the terminus for Amtrak's Brazos Valley Line before being relocated to Round Rock about 10 miles away in 1992 when Amtrak abandoned its passenger service between Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth along with most other American railroads during the late 1960s through early 1970s when Interstate 35 crossed into Texas from Mexico near Lubbock . Pampa has experienced many ups and downs over its history but never lost its spirit; even today local businesses continue to operate despite difficult economic times due to their dedication to customer service (just ask anyone working at any local grocery store). Pampa was founded in 1874 by John Ladd and his wife Elizabeth. The first post office opened in 1876. The present courthouse was built in 1925 and is a two-story red brick structure with a gable roof and Queen Anne style design. A large copper clock faces the square façade. In 1938, Pampa had its own radio station, WKRP (AM). WKRP ceased operations in 1967 but continues to be used as an air ambulance transmitter link from nearby Arlington Heights Regional Medical Center. In 1939, Pampa became home to what is now the University of Texas at Austin's Round Rock campus when it moved from Fort Worth to Medina County. Today UT Austin has over 27,000 students and employs more than 50 faculty members on its main campus located just south of town along Interstate 35W near the IH10 entrance ramp off I-35W. One of Pampa's most famous residents was Artie Cochran who played for the Rangers (now the Astros) from 1951-1958 and 1959-1962 before playing for Boston Red Sox (now the Red Sox) that year alsoverning he coached their farm team including stints with both teams as well as coaching under high school players/coaches such as Bobby Doerr who led UCLA to four NCAA championships during Cochran's time there including one during his final season at UCLA which ended up being vacated due to NCAA violations; brother Joe also played professional baseball for many years (#8 career hit total), father Bud finished his MLB career with 511 hits including 3 home runs & 144 RBIs
