In the 1860s, Paris, Texas was a small town of just over 1,000 people. The town had been founded by hunter and rancher C.H. Smith in 1851 as a stop on his way to find new land. By 1870, the town had grown to around 2,500 residents and was known for its cattle drives and hunting opportunities. In 1876, two men from Paris were driving their horse-drawn vehicle down an open road in what is now Dallas when they saw a large herd of buffalo across the road. They decided to try to take them with their horse and driver getting close enough to shoot at the animals with their pistols but soon realizing that this would be suicidal they turned back and drove home without trying to take any buffalo. As they approached their house they could see five or six more buffaloes standing right next to it watching them drive away! In 1892, French artist Félix Faure donated three pieces of art - a sculpture of a bulldog named Philemon (1893), a set of still lifes called La Nouvelle Héloïse et les Gorges de Marly (1894), and an equestrian statue named L’Aigle d’Or (1896) - to Paris, Texas in memory of his friend Admiral Louis Renault who had died during World War I in France. The city fathers quickly began planning for urban development around the statue so that it could become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas. In 1916, Mayor Harry Averill announced that Paris would be host city for both the world's fair celebrating American democracy and also serve as temporary capital for Tarrant County until Dallas became official capital on July 4th due to population growth thereabouts. On October 16th 1921 President Warren Harding made history when he addressed Congress addressing how America was goingto fight World War II "not only because we must but because every man desires it." With Houston having become an unofficial capital following Hurricane Harvey that year things seemed settled between Dallas and Houston; however days later on October 19th Ambassador John McCloy notified Congress via telegram that Paris would be chosen as temporary capital due To growing military presence thereabouts after German forces captured Munichwald airfield which connected Germany with Italy thereby opening up war supplies lines into Austria through Hungary!!! It wasn't until 1933 when Professor Longhorn discovered oil reserves nearParis that Tarrant County officially became part of Texas on February 14th 1934!!!!! In 1912, John Hogg founded Jardine Hogg Paper Company here and began manufacturing paper products such as corrugated cardboard and pulpwood certificates for local businesses. The company continued until it merged with Brownells (later Barker) Incorporated in 1984 to become Brownells-Hogg Corporation.
