In 1853 Carlos Borrego surveyed what is now downtown Pflugerville when he was surveyor for Llano & San Antonio Railroad; he named it "Borrego" after him because one day he found a gray deer living thereabouts. A post office was established at Borrego in 1865, and by 1870 it had become known as "Pflugerville." A railroad station was built at Borrego in 1903 by Lufkin & Baylor Railway Company; it served as both an terminals for trains coming into and leaving Dallas/Fort Worth throughDallas Terminal Station (later renamed Cowboys Stadium) and as a location where passengers could change cars before reaching their destination stations west of town. After World War II many farmers converted their land into housing developments; by 1960 about 60% of all Pflugerville residents lived within 10 miles (16 km) of either job sites or schools. During these years some local businesses struggled while others prospered due to heavy industry which began moving out during the late 1970s when deregulation occurred throughout most Fortune 500 companies across America including those headquartered in Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area although some retained jobs such as Alcoa among others within newly created suburban areas outside DFW airport boundaries which became known as "the glitzy side". This mill continued to be operated by Drury until it was destroyed by fire in 1937. In 1898, Fenton Cone built a ranch house located east of downtown Pflugerville on what is now Slaughter Lane. It served as the headquarters for cattle ranchers during World War I and II. In 1931, Jock Mahoney organized a group of farmers who wanted to form their own township within Williamson County but they were unsuccessful because only 4 percent of all voters supported their proposal to do so.
