The town was founded on July 4, 1870 by Colonel John Bigham with help from sixty men under his command after he surveyed land within present-day PFLUGERVILLE on which to build a new community. The original plat included three blocks square with houses facing east on Cedar Street (now Main Street). The name "Pflugerville" originated from German colonial immigrants who called it Pfalzwerthstadt (which means "village near Pfalz"). In 1881 Lillie Denton married James Wescott; they moved into what is now House #8 on Main Street that year. James Wescott served as postmaster from 1880 until his death in 1901; henceforth mail service came through House #8 instead of downtownPflugerville because it was easier to get deliveries there than through other parts of town. A later addition to this house – located just west of current day House #8 – housed an early telephone company office which continued to be used until 1984 when phone service was discontinued statewide due to budget cuts during the Reagan administration.. However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s there were some efforts to revive interest in downtown PflUGERVILLE with plans for restaurants and a new cultural complex called "The Ring". These efforts have been successful enough that today's population of about 25 thousand is still significantly larger than when it first began growing teeth decades ago!
