White as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. The post office moved to its present location in 1886. Plainview is named after Plain View Creek which flows through the town. The first settler in Plainview was John Nance who arrived there from Illinois in 1881 with his family. He built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street near railroad tracks that served as his home for over 50 years until he passed away in 1903. His son James Nance also lived there for many years before moving to Midlothian, Texas in 1960. James' widow Martha Goolsby purchased the building where she currently lives and operated it as an antebellum farm until her death in 1984. The buildings still stand today and are used as a museum of local history and culture.. In 1886, William Hulbert established the first commercial grocery store in Plainview when he opened the First National Grocery Store on Elm Street between Third and Fourth Streets.. In 1916, Averell Harriman donated land east of Elm Street to become what is now Harriman Park.. In 1925, Jens Jensen bought property west of Elm Street from Averell Harriman for $2,000.. In 1932, Drury Fenton opened Prairie View Hospital here which became one of the largest hospitals providing care for patients from all over North Texas.. Plainview is a town in Brown County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,855 at the 2010 census. Plainview was founded in 1881 by Scotsmen who had settled in what is now western Brown County. It served as county seat from 1881 to 1903 when that office was transferred to Corsicana. The first post office in Plainview opened on October 15, 1881. In 1903, the town consolidated with other nearby towns and became the present-day town of Plainview. The first settler in what is now Plainview was James McKay (1821-1892). McKay came from Glasgow, Scotland and homesteaded land near Corsicana in 1871. He named his land "PlainVIEW" after he saw a view of the Plains of Abraham from his farmhouse on July 4, 1871. When he died in October of that year at the age of 82 years, he leaves behind six children: two sons and four daughters who all live in Brownsville today; one son lives south of Corsicana and three daughters are scattered around various locations within Texas and Oklahoma; one daughter married an American citizen and has since relocated back to Scotland; one daughter wed an Englishman and they have also relocated back to Scotland permanently. The first post office in plainview opened on October 15th, 1881 by mail order from New York City under direction of Senator John Sherman due to lack of local services at that time! On January 16th 1907 we received our first package inside our postal box! Yes…our very own mail order form arrived via express delivery just for us 🙂 This early history can be found throughouttowns across America as small businesses grew & flourished due to lack or availability of regular postal service! In 1916 ranchers started selling livestock out side their homes which increased demand for both water & transport onto the open range which then led directly into cattle farming today!
