Plainview, Texas is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from "plain view", meaning looking out over a valley or plain. The Plainview Manufacturing Company was founded in 1883 by Charles Fenton and John Sulloway. It became one of the largest fabricators of high-capacity power supplies in the world. In 1922, Plainview became one of fourteen townships in Cameron County created when it was split off from Tyler County. In 1957, Plainsong Electric Supply Corporation was founded as part of a larger electrical industry consolidation led by Samuel Insull and his brother-in-law Julius Rosenwald. Plainsong produced large numbers of high capacity power supplies for military and commercial applications until its bankruptcy in 1984. In 2006, Plainsong's assets were sold to Dutch Realty Trust for $2 billion. Dutch Realty Trust operates Prairie View A&M University which Plainsong had leased to lease land on for production of electric vehicles and other industrial uses since 1923; however those leases expired in 2016 and the university plans to operate without any government subsidy through 2019.[1][2]

This led to increased development around FM 620 with people building homes on top of wells and other structures until 1975 when rail traffic stopped coming to PlainVIEW so most development stopped too.

In 1876, Plainview was founded on the bank of the Colorado River. It was named for Captain John Plainview, a Civil War veteran and cattle rancher who had acquired the land in 1855. The first settler in Plainview was James Fenton, who arrived in 1877. In 1890, placer goldmining began on the plain near present-day Cross Plains and led to rapid growth in Plainview. By 1912, it had 587 residents and was one of Texas' largest towns. The city's decline began during World War II when many of its workers relocated to other parts of Texas because of the war effort. However, even after the war ended, growth slowed as people turned their attention to agricultural pursuits. In 1963, Plainview annexed neighboring Cross Plains, which made it one of the last municipalities to do so in Texas. As a result of this annexation, Plainview became one of three cities within Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area (the others being Arlington and Irving). In recent years, there has been increased interest in returningplainviewto its former glory as a center for commerce and culture. A number of projects have been undertaken to revive downtown business districts and improve public transportation options; most notably an $8 million renovation project that added new restaurants and shops to both sides of Main Street between Elm Street and White Sands Boulevard.
