In the 1860s and 1870s, Port Arthur was a thriving port town in Texas. It became known for its gun barrels, which were exported to all corners of the United States. Port Arthur was founded in 1881 as a small town on the Texas-Mexico border. The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to natural resources, and by 1886 it had become a major shipping center for goods coming into and out of Mexico. In 1910, Port Arthur was annexed by the city of Dallas, making it the only municipality in Texas without voting representation in the state government. In 1913, Port Arthur was designated as the capital of Texas and began to grow more politically important because of its strategic location on the main highway linking Dallas with New Orleans. In 1938, after several years of negotiations, Port Arthur became an independent city under the jurisdiction ofDallas. The post-World War II boom period saw a growth in economic activity in PortArthur that helped make it one of Texas' most prosperous cities. However, during the late 1960s and early 1970s there were large-scale social problems associated with rapid population growth and changing demographics; these led to calls for regulation of port traffic, housing development near commercial areas, and increased spending on infrastructure projects such as expressways and parks. That year also saw the opening of Texas A&M University's School of Veterinary Medicine (now Baylor College of Medicine), one of only two veterinary schools atTexas A&M before World War I. Port Arthur was founded by the Texas Rangers in 1836. It became a major trading center for cattle and goods after the Republic of Texas was founded in 1845. The town was destroyed during the Mexican-American War, but was rebuilt. The town reached its peak during World War I when it had a population of 100,000 people. However, the town declined after the war and died out over time.
