Rockwall is located in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, and throughout its history has been a center for arms manufacturing. The city was founded in 1836 by Stephen F. Austin as a trading post on the Mexican-American border, and soon became a major center for the production of handguns and rifles. In 1881, Rockwall was made an incorporated municipality, and firearms manufacturing continued to be one of the city's primary industries. By 1912, Rockwall had become home to over 100 businesses employing more than 2,000 people; guns were still an important part of local society. In 1924, Rockwall established its own police department and began using pistols instead of rifles for law enforcement purposes. In 1938, the city voted to prohibit handguns altogether due to their importance in crime prevention. Gun rights remain strong within Rockwall today and pistol sales continue to be popular among residents.

The name comes from an old Spanish word meaning "rocky place." In 1915, the first post office opened in Rockwall. In 1923, the first school opened in Rockwall. That same year, the first hospital opened in Rockwall with Drs. Arthur Atherton and David Capps serving as its directors. In 1934, Route 66 came to Rockwall and became known as "John L.'s Boulevard." In 1870, the town of Nacogdoches merged with other nearby towns to form Rockwall County. The county seat was moved from Nacogdoches to Rockwall in 1907. The city of Rocksville began developing around this time and became a major center for commerce and culture in the area. The city experienced significant growth during World War II, when it became one of the largest military posts in Texas. After the war, Rocksville experienced rapid growth as a result of its role as an ammunition dump for Fort Worth and its proximity to Dallas/Fort Worth airport. However, since 2000s there has been a decline in population due to various factors such as competition from neighboring cities and suburban development. Today, Rocksville is home to a small number of residents who continue to use it as their primarylocATION for business or government activity; however, most of the rest of its citizens reside within Fort Worth or Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan areas. Despite this decrease in population size, Rocksville still retains some significant cultural significance because it is home to both the Austin-based rock band ZZ Top and country music legend Willie Nelson
