There is no doubt that the rock wall of Rockwall, Texas was built primarily to protect people and property from Native Americans. The area has been inhabited by the Köppen family for over two hundred years, and the first European settlers arrived in 1836. The fortifications were designed to prevent Indian attacks on the local community. In 1865, a surveyor named George Stephenson determined that a line of defense could be drawn along the bluff overlooking town. This line became known as the walls of Rocky Ford and was one of the most effective defenses against Indian attack during its time.
