Rowlett and his family in 1872 as a small community on the banks of the Trinity River. The first settlers were James S. Rowlett and his wife Sarah, who came from England in 1849. Their children were James Jr., John F., Elizabeth (Betsy), Sarah J., and Margaret (Maggie). James Sr.'s brother, George W., also settled in Rowlett early on and helped to build some of the early buildings there. In 1875, James S. Rowlett married Martha Jane Bledsoe and moved to Rowlett with her. They had six children: Mary A., Anna L.," Edwin C.," Harriet M." (actually "Hattie" because she died young), and Lewellyn H." (Lenny). The last three names are usually given together because they were all born in one year - 1918 - 1919! The earliest settlement in what is now Midland County was on the banks of Trinity River about two miles south of present-day Rowlett where pioneer John Denton built what became known as the Denton Ranch after moving from Kentucky in 1827.. However it was not until 1872 when James S. Rowletts family moved to this location from their original home near Sheffield Hallam which they had acquired from an earlier settler named John Ballinger . In that same year ,James S.(Rowletts) rowett laid out a town site including lots for dwellings on both sides of Trinity river ............................................................................... ..... According to local legend these Lots included one just northwest corner lot which still stands today occupied by Mrs Gertrude Greene's house today ......... This story goes that Mrs Greene offered her lot if anyone could build a house thereon but no one could so she donated it back to its previous owner .......... After lengthy construction work most residents set down their tools and began life over again as a small farming community called 'Rowletts '. Two years later another group of pioneers arrived led by Colonel William Tarrant ................. For many years thereafter Gridley would be considered more important due to its strategic position along I-10
Rowlett was founded in 1876 by John Rowlett and his wife, Sarah. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Red River and its access to natural resources. In 1886, Rowlett became the first town in Texas to have a telephone service. By 1907, the town had over 1,000 residents and was making advances in technology such as oil well drilling and hydraulic fracturing. However, World War I interrupted these advancements, causing the city to decline for many years. In the 1930s, Rowlett regained some of its former glory withthe erection of several large office buildings and a new library. Additionally, Rowlett began developing into an industrial center with a number of manufacturing companies including Halliburton (now ethylene oxide producers), Dow Chemical Company (now DuPont), Lockheed Martin(now Lockheed Martin Aeronautics)and Schlumberger(now Schlumberger Limited). However, during the 1970s and 1980s rowlet experienced a series of economic setbacks which led to loss of jobs and declining population size. As result of this decline, Rowlett has been classified as a "small town" by The Carnegie Foundation since 1984
