Sachse is located on the north side of the White River and about 18 miles (29 km) southeast of Bastrop. The town was founded in 1881 by German immigrants who named it after their birthplace, Sachsenhausen (formerly Saalfeld). It became a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad and prospered as a cotton-growing community until its incorporation as a municipality in 1907. The post office closed in 1954. The center of Sachse is an open-air shopping mall that opened in 1984 and contains several stores including Sears and JCPenney. Sachse also built a sawmill and gristmill around this time and began to commerce with other parts of the country. In 1867, he donated land to create what is now downtown Sachse. In 1907, Sachse became an incorporated city with a population of about 5,000 people. He died in 1918 and his wife took over his business interests until her death in 1934. Today, downtown Sachse remains as an important commercial center for the town and its surrounding area.
Sachse is located in Kaufman County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, its population was 14,567. Sachse was founded by Levi Sidel in 1879 and named for him. A post office called Sachse was established in 1882, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The city of Sachse consolidated with the town of McKinney on January 1, 1907.
