The brothers had purchased land east of town from the Mexican government for $1 per acre. They began construction on a ranch named Rancho San Marcos, which eventually became part of the City of San Marcos. In 1882, the first gun was manufactured in San Marcos by Elisha Gray. This rifle was called the “Gray Rifle” because it was made of gray wood and black powder instead of white oak barrel and black powder. The rifle was used by Captain George W. During World War II, much progress was made with regards to firearm production in San Marcos with most notably being advancements made with regard to ammunition production which allowed for increased accuracy with projectiles up to 800 yards long! Today,San Marcos is home to a number of businesses including two hospitals (University Medical Center and Christ Medical Center), three libraries (SanMarcos Public Library System; Starr County Library; Trinity United Methodist Church), four parks (Fiesta Park; John F Kennedy Park; Southpark Lakefront Park), two seminaries (Seminary Of The Immaculate Conception And Seminary Of Jesus Christ) and two universities (Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi campus; Texas Southern University). There are also several restaurants and bars located throughout downtownSanMarcos as well as numerous shopping centers located within easy walking distance of various neighborhoods including Old Towne Austin and Midtown Austin.

The city of San Marcos, Texas was founded on November 10, 1846 by the citizens of Pecos County. The town was named for General James Bowie, who had led a successful campaign against Mexican forces in 1845. The city grew rapidly after it was established and by 1860, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1868, San Marcos became the county seat of Pecos County.
