San Marcos, Texas is a city in El Paso County, Texas, United States. The population was 61,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The downtown area of San Marcos was founded by Texans who came to the area in 1836 as part of the Santa Fe Expedition under General Sam Houston. The first store in town was built on what is now Elm Street and Main Street. In 1840, the military post known as Fort Ord was established here and soon became an important center for commerce and culture in this region. In 1849, after Mexican nationals were driven out of Bexar County by Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican-American War, residents of San Marcos petitioned Presley to become its own municipality; he ultimately granted their request on February 10th, 1850. At that time there were only a handful of homes in town with a population over 100 people; however, by 1858 there had grown to more than 500 people living here with shops and businesses located throughout downtown including two hotels which still stand today: The Palace House (now known as "The Regency") and The Commodore Hotel (now known as "The Clarion"). As late as 1898 some 80% of all cotton grown in El Paso County came from San Marcos; it continued to be an important crop until recently when other areas began pumping more groundwater for irrigation purposes which has led to decreased production values for this commodity around town since about 1970s or even earlier due to water restrictions placed on municipalities by state government agencies like environmentalists groups who felt that irrigated cotton farming would deplete available groundwater supplies needed for other uses such as schools and infrastructure projects across South Texas agricultural counties like Odessa/Edinburg/Mission Valley etc., California borderlands etc.,etc.; but despite these restrictions many families continue operations within city limits doing business either through familyowned stores or large commercial chains like Safeway or Kroger because they believe that it’s still their home – unlike most suburbanites where “home” means suburbia
