From this position he began exploring areas around present day Albuquerque which would become part of the future town of Santa Fe when it was granted independence from Mexico on February 14th 1821 following a revolt against Mexican rule over New Mexico’s indigenous population known as “The Creek Wars” led by Tomochiuh (Koyocco) Cabeza de Vaca and his band of 400 pioneers under General Francisco García de la Garza y Oñate y Dominguez Saltillo (1754-1828). When Mexican forces recaptured Albuquerque on July 24th 1847 following three months fought with Ulysses S Grant’s 7th Infantry Regiment under Lt Col José Joaquín Benítez y Costilla alias Don José del Valle Redondo (1795-1868), Governor Alvarado ordered all male Native American inhabitants – about 50% – taxed headlong into exile to await transportation southward along riverboats across Lake Texcoco under guard from local Indian chiefs known as “Los Niños Voluntarios” or “The Boys Who Went Forth With Their Canoes”. Of these approximately 25 men only 4 survived beyond arrival at Baja California where they were interned with other Mexicans awaiting deportation back home through what is now Mexicali County, Baja California Sur; today’s Los Angeles County especially towards downtown San Diego proper…………………………………………………..
