The first settler in Schertz was James Schertz on October 17, 1847. He and his family moved from Illinois to Williamson County in 1849. On November 3, 1850, James Schertz married Sarah White and their first child was born on December 10th. The community of Schertz sprang up around the Davis-Macon wagon road that connected Austin and Williamson County through what is now Schertz Township and parts of today's Round Rock Township. A post office called "Schertz" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865 the Collins family settled here also and continued to operate a general store until about 1880 when they sold all their land to General Wm Hogg for $3 per acre ($40 per square mile). This transaction marked the end of an era of large scale ranching by Texans because it eliminated any possibility of competition from Mexicans who were flooding intoTexas during that time period seeking new homes outsideofthe U. S., especially since Mexico had not yet become a republic under Mexican rule

Schertz, Texas is a small town located in Richardson County, Texas. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. Schertz is one of the oldest towns in Richardson County and has been around since 1881. Schertz is also one of the youngest towns in Richardson County by age. The city of Schertz was founded on December 12th, 1881 by John W. Muller and James Fenton as part of a cross-country wagon ride from Wichita Falls to Dallas following Major General Sam Houston's victory over Mexican forces at the Alamo two months earlier. When they reached Schertz they ran into hostility from local ranchers who accused them of being "stray cattle" and "raccoons". However, this only increased Muller and Fenton's determination to found their own town which would be an equal partner with its neighboring cities in Richardson County. In 1886, John Pritzker bought 640 acres in what is now northeast Schertz for $10 per acre (this land later became known as Pritzker Park). He began farming it and soon had a large herd of Hereford cows that he milked for his butter and cheese products. In 1888 Pritzker donated 1 acre to the City of Schertz for use as a public square which remains today as Memorial Square off Main Street in downtown Schertz. In 1893 German immigrants George Kappeler and Emil Schulz settled on 100 acres northwest of town along Highway 287, becoming the first Germans to live permanently outside Germany when they arrived here in October 1893. From here they started planting fruit trees on their farmstead that eventually yielded 400 bushels per acre (1/2 ton) of apples per year until 1915 when World War I interrupted their production; however, during World War II their apple orchard produced 1 million bushels (50 tons) of apples! After Reconstruction ended in 1865 with Fayetteville taking over all east Texas government functions inside Johnson County lines - including those within Richardson - most native Texans left north-central TX for Uniontown (now Wichita Falls), Amarillo or El Paso due to political persecution there under Confederate occupation during that time period.
