He named it after his father-in-law's home, Seabrook Hall on Long Island in New York City. A post office called Seabrook was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1909. The town center was platted in 1879 by John Witherspoon and others under the name "Erie." In 1907, Seabroxa became an independent municipality with its own government and community hall; it disjoined from Erie Township when that township merged with Dallas to form Dallas County. The original school buildings were built between 1906 and 1912 as part of a larger school project sponsored by local industrialists David Ladd and Jock Sutherland; construction began on what is now First Baptist Church after a fundraising drive financed by Ladd reached $10,000 within four days. Classes started on September 8th, 1906 classes finished two weeks later on October 4th due to weather conditions that caused mudslides along the creek which disrupted water supply for several months during winter; all students were reassigned to other schools before finally reopening on November 6th according to teacher scheduling irregularities which were resolved with little fanfare despite heavy snowfall over Christmas break which created more problems than solutions given how difficult things had become).
