Seagoville is located in the U.S. state of Texas and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 154,362. The name "Seagoville" comes from Spanish meaning "Island at the Sea." It was founded by Captain James Stockton in 1849 as a trading post on an island at the mouth of the Trinity River. At that time, it consisted of just a few buildings and was only a small fishing village with no permanent residents. The town became a center for cotton smuggling during The Great American Cotton Strike of 1913-1914 because it had been selected as one of three landing sites for Confederate soldiers who were trying to flee America following The Civil War. Seagoville's role as a key transportation hub helped make it an important cotton market place for years after the war ended. In 1951, Seagoville became an incorporated city when it annexed portions of Garland and Irving Heights in North Dallas County. Today, Seagoville is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration which features both concerts and events throughout October including German music, food vendors, children's activities, beer gardens and more.

In the early days of the town's development, many of its residents worked on nearby ranches and farms. However, during Reconstruction (1868-1877) Seagoville became one of the most active towns in central Texas for political activity. It was also an important center for railroad transportation and commerce during this time period.
