Seagoville, Texas is a small town in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It is located on the eastern edge of Richardson County and lies within the unincorporated community of Gurnee. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. The first colonists to arrive in what is now Seagoville were farmers who arrived around 1836. The town started as a tiny village named after Captain John Seagrave, who had been sent by Governor Tarrant to explore new land west of Fort Worth. In 1852, another group of settlers arrived and built a courthouse and stockade around what is now Main Street. They called the settlement "Seagrave." By 1860, there were over 25 residents in Seagoville. In 1886, two brothers named Wirt and Lemuel Selvin bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land east of present day Seagoville from James A. White for $1 per acre ($10 per km²). They began to build a ranch which would become known as Selvin Ranch. The Selvins continued to own and manage their ranch until it was sold to Harry Hays in 1933. The cattle industry played an important role in the development ofSeagoville; early ranchers raised Hereford, Angus and Holstein cow herds as well as pigs and sheep on their properties. In 1925, Hugo Chavez became mayor of Dallas; he decided that Dallas should have its own city government so he purchased 5 square miles (12 km²) north of downtownDallas from Jock Livingston for $5 per acre ($25 per km²). Chavez donated this land to Dallas for use as an open air parkland known today as Chavez Park
