Sherman, Texas is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Texas. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. It is the fifteenth most populous city in Texas and one of its oldest. Sherman was founded by A.J. Smith on November 12, 1881 as a post office and rail station on the Atascocita Branch of the Santa Fe Railway. The town developed around two railroad stations: Sherman Post Office (1881-1901) and Hood County Courthouse (1882-1984). The first courthouse was built in time for Marshall County's centennial celebration in 1882. The second courthouse was built to serve Hood County until it consolidated with neighboring counties in 1984. In 1865, General John Custer fought his last battle at what is now called "Custer Hill" near present day Shermantown in central Kerr County, Kansas; this event helped spur Sherman's development as a commercial center during that era. In 1887, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited town while on his way to campaign against Mexico City into Mexican territory; he purchased land adjacent to what is now Main Street for $5 per acre ($100 per acre today). This purchase increased Sherman's influence within its own community and led to its emergence as an important center of commerce during the late 19th century and early 20th century. After World War I, many American soldiers who had served in Europe returned home and wanted their families to join them there too; these troops brought with them their firearms and shooting traditions which they passed down to their children or grandchildren. Sherman was a small town in the Tejon Mountains, located about twenty miles northeast of San Antonio. It was founded by John Sherman in 1874 as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The town had a population of around seventy-five at its peak in the early 1920s. Sherman declined to incorporation as a city in 1937, but it remains an incorporated village with a population of just over one thousand today. John Sherman and his wife, Nannie, were pioneer settlers in Sherman. They arrived there between 1874 and 1875 after traveling through Texas on horseback and wagon. In 1876, they built their first home on what is now North Main Street. By 1880, they had two other homes and four children living in Sherman. The Shermans were among the earliest settlers to come to Texas and built the first permanent structures there: A barn and farmhouse on Maple Street (now Elm Street) became known as “The Gables”; an academy building (later renamed “McPherson High School”) on South Main Street became known as “The Oaks”; an old mill that still stands near West Side Boulevard became known as “The Strings”; and a house on East Side Boulevard became known as “The Pines”. John Sherman served terms as mayor of Sherman from 1896 to 1898 and from 1912 to 1916. He also served three times as county judge during this time period. He died in 1914 at the age of eighty-eight years old while serving as sheriff of Bexar County, Texas
Sherman was founded in 1881 by George Sherman. The town is named for General George A. Marshall, who served as the first United States Secretary of War and later became the first U.S. President to be impeached.
