Snyder is a small town in Hudson County, Texas and it has been home to the Snyder family since 1853. The Snyder family was one of the original settlers in what is now Snyder County. They started out as farmers and moved to their current location in 1853. The Snyder farmstead still stands today and it is one of the oldest buildings in the town. The Snyder farmstead was originally known as "Moses". In 1927, Samuel Snyders grandson, Virgil Snyders son, and brothers Cyrus and Harry bought the old Moses farmstead from the previous owner and changed its name to "Snyder". After Virgil Snyders death in 1962, his wife Gertrude took over running the farmstead until her death in 1984. After Gertrude's death, daughter-in-law Pat served as caretaker until she died in 2001. The town of Snyder was founded on November 3rd, 1853 by families from neighboring LaGrange County including James Purdy (Jasper) Wright (1812-1892), John Monaghan (1795 - 1865), Michael Sheehan (1796-1864), Adam McMahon (1800 - 1887) and John Haggerty (1800 - 1861). On December 12th of that year, James Purdy married Abigail Fenton who came from nearby Waco with her family. From that day forward, all residents of Snyder were required to attend church services every Sunday morning at 6:00am regardless of whether they could afford to do so or not. This early form of government brought about many social/idempotence problems which were eventually solved through arbitration or litigation. In 1854, General Zachary Taylor appointed George Armstrong Custer lieutenant colonel commanding all American forces south of Mexico City under General Scott’s command during his campaign against Mexican Emperor José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla.. On July 9th following Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s victory at San Jacinto some 1st Texas units under Lt Col Custer attacked Mexican General Cosme García’s army near Nacogdoches while supplies were being transferred between these two armies en route to Alamo Heights; this resulted in heavy losses for both sides with Lt Col Custer leading an 8 man unit which made up most of those killed along with Capt William Tatum who later became Commanding Officer at San Jacinto Battlefield National Monument where he remains buried today
Snyder was first settled in 1836 by the Snyder brothers, who were also the founders of what is now Midland. The community grew rapidly due to the post-Civil War boom in ranching and farming. In 1865, Snyder became a part of the Republic of Texas and remained so until 1898, when it seceded from that state and became an independent republic called Texarkana. In 1907, Texarkana merged with Wichita Falls to form Wichita Falls-Texarkana County.
