Temple is a town in Taylor County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Temple was founded in 1859 by John White and his wife Hannah. The town was named after the biblical Temples of Israel. In 1893, Temple became a part of Houston and in 1907 it became a part of Austin. In 1911, Temple welcomed its first black family when Dr. James Hightower's wife moved to the town from Missouri. Temple's black community flourished until violence erupted over integration into white society in 1965-1966 known as the Black Revolution which left over 50 people dead and thousands injured throughout central Texas including many who were killed at temple services that week during Pentecostal revival meetings across the state capital city of Austin .After days of nonviolent protests led by Rev. George Jackson with international condemnation from leaders such as Pope John XXIII , King Tubby Stephens announced on October 20th 1966 that all integrated schools would be open for students starting November 1st 1966 with "the specific understanding that no religious instruction or symbols will be given to any minority group other than whites." The following year on December 3rd 1967 three African American boys were kidnapped from their home near San Antonio while they attended church services and held ransom by members of white supremacist paramilitary groups called “The Posse Comitatus” who had opposed integration since before World War II .On January 9th 1968 two more black boys were kidnapped from their home near Dallas while attending church services; one was found dead weeks later outside an affluent homeowner’s home after his parents reported him missing; this case remains unsolved to this day On February 2nd 1968 four African Americans - Eldridge Cleaver, Vernon Jordan, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner -were abducted from a Montgomery restaurant parking lot close to downtown Houston by white supremacists working for Grand Wizard David Lane · Fourteen years later on November 5th 2001 (six days after Hurricane Katrina ), Louisiana native Arlen Specter successfully ran for U.S Congress against then incumbent Tom Delay in New Orleans – becoming only the second person ever to do so from Baton Rouge · On January 12th 2006 (four days before landfall), Hurricane Rita destroyed most of metropolitan New Orleans including much of its inner city · More than 500 people died as a result including majority African American residents living within Katrina’s path
