However, as cotton prices dropped beginning in the 1840s, construction began on what would become known as The Wall - a series of stockades that served as a means of restricting access to land west of Interstate 10 for farmers who did not own slaves. By 1849, much of The Colony had been destroyed by drought and fire. Today only two buildings remain standing from when The Colony was an thriving community: Baptist Church and School House.

The colonists were primarily from Kentucky and Tennessee but also from North Carolina, Maryland, and West Virginia. They erected a fortification on the banks of the Trinity River to protect themselves from Indian attacks and to trade with the Mexican Empire. In 1839, they built a larger fortification called Fort Worth (now Arlington) to protect their settlement from Indian attack. The colonists successfully defended Fort Worth against repeated Apache raids during the 1840s and 50s. By 1860, about 400 people lived in Colony; 60% of them were farmers or farm laborers. However, violence continued between settlers and Indians until 1865 when all Native Americans were removed from the area by Ulysses S. Grant as part of his policy known as "Arapaho Removal."
