The Colony was founded in 1881 by James Fenton and his wife, Eliza. They were among the first settlers in what would become present day Texas. In 1889, Jackson organized a meeting to discuss creating a regulation for rifle shooting that would be followed by all southern states. This meeting led to the creation of boththe NRA (National Rifle Association) and RSHP (Rifle Shooting Society). The Colony, Texas is a large, sparsely populated city in Medina County, Texas. The population was 576 at the 2010 census. It is named after the Dutch colony of New Netherland and its founders, Cornelis Banning and his brother-in-law Jacobus Voorhees. The city was founded on October 18, 1907 by developers from Dallas who were looking for an area to build a post office and cotton gin. The first settlers arrived in early 1908 and soon began to build homes. By 1912, the town had a school, jail, store, blacksmith shop, doctor's office and two churches. In 1914 it had also acquired a water tower and cemetery. In 1916 the community became part of Medina County when it was organized as a township. The following year it annexed the unincorporated community of Prairie View which had been formed in 1909 by residents of neighboring townships that would later become part of Medina County. During World War II (1939-1945), the Colony was home to over 60 military stations operational along IH 35W which served as an airfield for fighter planes engaged in Operation Neptune's Spear during World War II; these stations included Waco Army Air Field (now Baylor Universityfw airport), Humble Army Air Base (now Kenedy Municipal Airport) and San Jacinto Army Air Field (now Hobby Airport). After the war ended the military presence gradually decreased until finally it ceased completely in 1949 when all installations were closed down except for Waco AAF which continued operations until its closure in 1987; thereafter Kenedy Municipal Airport took over functions at Waco AAF while Prairie View merged into Medina County effective January 1st 1959 serving as its new municipal airport with concurrent authority over both airports forming one government entity known as "Metropolitan Area National Airport Authority" or MANTRAGEUS/MAA.).
