The town plat was filed on February 14, 1854, and the first post office was established in March of that year. In 1860, Tomball had a population of forty-five residents and two stores. In 1892, Tomball erected its first schoolhouse. However, the structure burned down in 1903. In 1915, the town built its second schoolhouse which still stands today. In 1954, Tomball reverted to its original name of Tomlinson County when it became part of Seagoville Township in Ellis County. The county seat is now Waco; however, most business activities take place within the boundaries of Tomball proper. The townsite contains many historical buildings including: the old cotton gin (1854), courthouse (1862), post office building (1892), fire engine house (1915), and blacksmith shop (1937). Additionally, there are several small farms located within the borders of town limits which contribute to local agriculture production.
Tomball is located in the Houston-Galveston-Houston metropolitan area. Tomball was founded by two brothers, Hiram and Asa Tomball, on a ranch that they inherited from their father. In 1873, Tomball became the seat of Humble County after it was organized. The town's first post office opened in 1875. In 1907, Tomball absorbed part of the city of Galveston and became its own municipality. The population of Tomball peaked at 21,000 in 1951 but has declined since then.
