Tomball has a long and proud rifle stock history. The town was founded in 1892 by pioneer Travers Smith, who came to the area from Illinois. His brother-in-law, J.D. Morton, started the first store in Tomball and the town grew rapidly until it had two stores and ten residents when Texas became a state in 1912. The first sniper in Tomball was George Hennigan, who shot an animal for dinner at his home on 7th Street in 1916. At the time, rifles were only available to cavalry officers and their families. The early settlers of Tomball were drawn mainly from northern Illinoisan backgrounds because of the low cost of land here compared with other parts of Texas. Many of these people owned slaves and they used their slaves to farm land around Tomball until 1865 when they were given freedom as part of the American Civil War settlement process. After Reconstruction ended, some African Americans decided to come back to Texas and start anew. Some white Texans also decided to move back east after the end of World War I because new opportunities had opened up there for them after America’s involvement in that conflict overseas. Tomball was founded in 1881 by George Tomlinson. The community initially grew up around the cotton plantation on the east side of town. In 1912, the Tomlinson family donated land for a public high school and the town became one of its first students. In 1928, Tomball incorporated as a city. After the war ended in 1945 most people returned to their lives in downtown; however some businesses opened up on older streets such as Second Street between Main Street and US Highway 281 while others like Mr Clean renovated old buildings on Second Street into new apartments/commercial properties during this time period; these later businesses are still present today (late 1990s)

Tomball is located in the south central region of Texas, about 60 miles (96 km) northwest of Austin and about 120 miles (193 km) southeast of Dallas. In 1887–1888 Waco Oil Corporation leased land east of town for oil production and named it "Tomball".[1] In 1898 US Biscuit Company opened a small mill there which became known as "Biscuit Hill". Tomball has seen growth since its incorporation as a city in 1907 with an estimated population increase (+15%) exceeding that of nearby San Angelo (+10%). Development proceeds have included new shopping centers (such as Crazy Horse Mall), professional medical services (including two hospitals), schools and other businesses; however some residents continue to commute into larger cities for work or pleasure opportunities within 10 minutes’ strolls or less away including Austin proper within 30 minutes’ drive or less by car or bus service.
