Uvalde, Texas is a city in Austin County, Texas, United States. The population was 27,452 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Austin County. The Uvalde Independent School District educates students in grades K-12. The name "Uvalde" comes from Spanish meaning "old oak." In 1847 James Houston built what would become the first post office in what is now Uvalde. He named it after his brother and namesake, General James Houstons father-in-law, Antonio Bandera. After many changes of ownership and renaming over time to honor individuals or families who contributed to its growth (such as Judge John Witherspoon), in 1907 it was given its current name by then Mayor Harry Frye as an honor for J.W.'s father-in-law Sam Houston II, who had been governor at the time and donated land for a courthouse and school district that would eventually be renamed University Park Place after Houston's widow 1st Lady Anna Rice HarrisHouston). In 1957 businessman William Dolph began construction on what would become Interstate 10 through central Uvalde and annexed neighboring villages of Commerce City (renamed Uvalde) and Alpine (renamed Alpine Village). This saw the annexation of other villages including Mission Hills (renamed Pleasant Valley) and Dickinson which ceased to exist when I-10 was built into their boundaries. Today there are noVillages within the limits of I-10 proper but all three have been annexed by Uvaldi Township which forms much of its downtown area today with residences located along both sides of Gastonia Avenue between Lamar Boulevard & IH 35E while Businesses locate along Worth Street between Gastonia Avenue & Polk Boulevard becoming Pioneer Plaza today within Downtown Area satellite development known as Midtown Center

Uvalde is a small town in east Texas and was founded in 1877. It is the county seat of Uvalde County, and has a population of over 1,000 people. The town was named for General Sam Houston who fought in the Mexican-American War. Uvalde is located on the San Antonio River, which flows through the town. The first settler in what would become Uvalde was Jens Jensen who arrived in 1875. He built a log cabin near what is now the courthouse square. A year later, he married Anna Rasmussen and they set up house near where they still live today. In 1879, John Wickersham settled in what would become Uvalde and ran a sawmill on the San Antonio River. Wickersham also became president of the United States Bank in Austin, Texas from 1901 to 1912. In 1904, attorney George Hargrave bought some land northwest of present day Uvalde and began developing it into what would become one of America's largest cotton plantations called "Hargrave & Son". The area now includes much of downtown Uvalde as well as many other neighborhoods around it such as White Oak Park and Woodland Hills. The plantation closed in 1972 but parts have been redeveloped into mixed-use areas including apartments, office buildings, commerce center/strip mall etc.. In 1915 Jimmy Byrum started operating his own grocery store at Seventh Street and Market Place which remains open today as Jimmy Byrum's Store Inc., one of America's original drive-thru restaurants (and still operates). Other early businesses include an ice cream parlor at Second Street and Market Place known as Cream City Creamery (which closed down circa 1984), a post office at Fourth Street between Market Place and US Highway 281 (later developed into McAllister Square shopping center), an auto garage at SixthStreet betweenMarketPlace and US Highway 281 (later developed into Garland Mall), a blacksmith shop on Highway 281 just south of I-10 eastbound within city limits - all these businesses remain open to this day! By 1920 there were already over 100 residences in Uvaldo with about 50% being single family homes with others consisting mostly of two or three story frame buildings ornamented with Classical Revival or American Craftsman architecture that housed shops/factories/ churches etc.. itions continued to grow until World War II when most residents turned their attention towards agriculture only producing subsistence crops like cornmeal or beans while manufacturing came increasingly to dominate local economies e.g oil production then shipping; local defense contractors; paper mills; garment factories etc... during this time period many iconic structures such as Memorial Auditorium were built throughout town including use by various high school dance teams during their rehearsals before shows throughout South Austin... In 1960s LBJ hosted presidential debates here prior to his election victory campaign against Richard Nixon... After Johnson’s death Truman Capote used it for filming scenes for “In Cold Blood” movie

In the early days of the Texas Revolution, Uvalde served as a base of operations for the rebels. After the Battle of San Jacinto, Uvalde became an important outpost on the Mexican border. The town was sacked by Mexican forces in 1846 during the Alamo siege, and subsequently lost its importance to Austin. However, it continued to be a thriving community until the mid-20th century when it began to decline in population and prominence.
