Uvalde is a town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. They built residences and ranchos around what is now downtown Uvalde. The post office at Uvalde was established in 1854 and served until 1907. One significant event from this time period was the purchase of Rancho San Antonio de Taos by General James Fenton in 1876 for $4,000. This acquisition facilitated development within the town limits as well as its relationship with Dallas to the north-west. In 1898, business interests within Dallas led to creation ofDallas County; thus providing more opportunities for businesses within Uvalde boundaries and stimulating growth there as well. In 1909, construction began on one of America's first concrete blockships - USS "Victoria" - which helped promoteDallas COUNTY's role in commerce and industry throughout much of Texas during this time period. In 1925, Uvaldi had its first telephone line; however commercial use did not begin until 1941 when AT&T opened their TX Telephone Service facility here

The first white settler in Uvalde, Texas was James W. Garland on November 3, 1836. The town was platted in 1837 by the acting sheriff of Tejas County, John Cowles, who named it for General Simon Bolivar Houston. In 1839 Garland moved his family to Uvalde and founded the first school in Texas. He also built a Store and Post Office here. In 1840 he married Maria A. de la Garza and they had two children: Margarita (1841-1914) and Antonio (1843-1915). TheGarlandes operated a general store until about 1850 when business became too difficult with the Mexican Warurring around the area. In 1861 Uvalde participated in the Texan Civil War as a pro-Unionist town and during that time it had one of its most important events when General Sam Houston appointed Mayor Francisco Flores as military governor of Tejas County to help quell any pro-Confederate sentiment there among some of its citizens. In 1865 Uvalde became an independent republic after Mexico won their war against Great Britain while Texas remained part of the United States but with new boundaries drawn between the two countries which included parts of present day El Paso, Pecos County, New Mexico Territory, and Zacatecas County, Mexico Territory which all would become part of Juárez Municipality upon cessation of hostilities on July 14th 1870 by both nations
