Watauga, Texas is known for its gun culture and ammunition history. The city was founded in 1846 by families who immigrated from Ireland. When the railroad arrived in Watauga, the town quickly became a center for Ammunition production. In 1870, Watauga began producing rifle rounds and shotguns ammunition. By 1907, the city had become home to the first Armoury in Texas. Today, there are several Armoury's located throughout Watauga- including The Armoury at 4651 FM 828 (just east of downtown) which is open every day of the year from 9am to 5pm. In addition to armoury ammunition, Watauga also produces various types of shotgun rounds including buckshot and birdshot.

The Watauga Ammunition Company emerged in 1881 as a result of the merger of twogunners’ stores, the Hargrave Arms and Ammunition Company and the Parkes Rifle Works. The company was founded by Captain John E. Parkes, who had been president of the old Hargrave Armory. The first product from the Watauga Arsenal was a 9-mm Parabellum pistol called the “Watauga Model” that was manufactured in 1885. That year, also saw the introduction of a new cartridge called .25 ACP (or “Patriots”). It was designed to replace ball ammunition used in pistols and revolvers chambered for either .22 LR or 6 mm S&W Magnum rounds.

Other prominent residents include entrepreneur Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft), businessman Warren Buffett (the Berkshire Hathaway chairman), former U2 frontman Bono (of One Campaign fame), actress Brooke Shields (daughter of actor Pierce Brosnan), singer Joe Perry (from Kansas)

Watauga is a small town located in Montgomery County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Watauga is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and is home to many companies including Telus Waters Telecom Company, AT&T National Services Inc., Brookfield Asset Management Corporation, First Baptist Church Watauga and Sister Cities International Friendship Association Watauga. The first settlers in what is now Watauga were Native American people who lived near the confluence of the Neches and Trinity Rivers. In 1827, James Hogg established a ferry service between Huntsville and downtown Watauga for trading goods with local farmers. By 1830, Hogg had bought land on which he built a gristmill that became known as the "Hogg Mill". In 1835, James Witherspoon formed a mercantile company with three partners to establish an Indian trade route between Houston and Brownsville through present day Montgomery County. The business prospered until 1840 when it went bankrupt due to financial problems caused by Indian hostilities against Texas Texans. In 1845, John Fenton purchased the mill from Witherspoon and began operation as the "Fenton Mill". The mill continued operations until 1889 when it was replaced by a new machine shop and sawmill complex that still stands today. In 1867, businessman Philip Boren purchased some land along US 281 south of present day Watauga for development into what would become Austin. Because Austin was not developed until after World War II (when most of Montgomery County settled), much early history about Austin can only be found in rural areas such as Watauga where oral histories have been collected over time about early pioneer life there in what is now Austin Frisco . Watauga experienced significant growth during the late 19th century following construction of state highway 17 (now I-30) which linked Dallas-Fort Worth with Montgomery County via Athens - thenAustin-. Sherman as a small station on the Santa Fe Railroad. Watauga became part of the newly created Marshall County on December 6, 1881.
