Waxahachie, Texas was founded on December 7, 1859 by Captain John W. Tayloe. The town was named for General James Fenton, who had led the Mexican Army in the Battle of Buena Vista. The first store in Waxahachie opened on May 1, 1860. By 1865, the population of Waxahachie had grown to over 100 people and it became a city on November 15, 1867.
